This quotation comes from canto 139, stanza 5. The full stanza reads as follows RwĂąneka dhĂątu winuwus Buddha Wiswa, BhinnĂȘki rakwa ring apan kena parwanosen, Mangka ng Jinatwa kalawan Siwatatwa tunggal, BhinnĂȘka tunggal ika tan hana dharma mangrwa. Translated It is said that the well-known Buddha and Shiva are two different substances. They are indeed different, yet how is it possible to recognise their difference in a glance, since the truth of Jina Buddha and the truth of Shiva is one. They are indeed different, but they are of the same kind, as there is no duality in Truth. This verse is taken from Javanese poem, written by Mpu Tantular in the Majapahit era in the 13th century. 13th Century!! By the time of Majapahit golden-era’, transaction between states have of course been well – established. Remember silk road’? How chinese kingdom travel the land to the west, in order to establish and develop their economy by selling pottery, ceramics, etc. I’m pretty sure i have read this when i was in elementary school. Due to many bandits, thieves, and how it is unsafe to travel by land, they change transportation by the fastest transportation by that time, which is by sea. Of course, given the routes, Indonesia have also become main benefactor of this economical exchange. Having the biggest maritime fleet, Majapahit conquered all the way to Oz land and India! What i am trying to say is. the people that lives in Indonesia right now have been living in diversity for over 6 centuries now.
Once i was asked by a student from Tanzania. A beautiful country also diversed in culture, tribes, and languages. Knowing the fact that Indonesia have almost the same span as USA, divided into 17000 islands, he asked me a question that still inscribed to my heart, and make me proud of being Indonesian. “How do you manage to keep all these diversities in Unity?” That question is until now remained unanswered, and i was put into disbelief that after 70 years something, Indonesia hasn’t been scattered into little different countries. So i begin asking myself, what kept us together until now? I remind myself of “Sumpah Pemuda” 1928 Firstly We the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one motherland, Indonesia. Secondly We the sons and daughters of Indonesia, acknowledge one nation, the nation of Indonesia. Thirdly We the sons and daughters of Indonesia, respect the language of unity, Indonesian. This statement are the very core of United Indonesia, pioneered by the best of the students by that time Chairman Sugondo Djojopuspito PPPI Vice Chairman Joko Marsaid Jong Java Secretary Mohammad Yamin Jong Soematranen Bond Treasurer Amir Sjarifudin Jong Bataks Bond Aide I Johan Mohammad Cai Jong Islamieten Bond Aide II R. Katjasoengkana Pemoeda Indonesia Aide III Sendoek Jong Celebes Aide IV Johannes Leimena Jong Ambon Aide V Mohammad Rochjani Su’ud Pemoeda Kaoem Betawi i am getting goosebumps writing this article, maybe because i open the window and it’s freezing cold, or the idea of Soempah Pemuda itself which i believe pioneered Indonesia as it is today. That generation have proven that whoever you are, which culture you are from, whatever ethnicity you are, whichever religion you are. we can come as united Indonesia. NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE! Everybody have the same right to live and love, to breed and to grow in our beloved country. Isn’t that the ideology of Indonesia that has been there even before our first independence day. But i refuse to believe that our unity nowadays comes from only words. So when i have the privilege to discuss about this matter with our 3rd President Eyang Habibie. He answered calmly that our country is a product of 3 centuries of colonialism by Dutch empire. The feeling when we all gathered to refuse being invaded, to love where we stand up for, the freedom of saying “THIS IS US, INDONESIA PEOPLE!”. Through this unity we won the war and received our independent, Through this unity we can call ourselves right now as a proud member of Indonesian people, who have survived 3 centuries of colonialism, and able to develop our own country. Please don’t forget that in the colonial era, there are many tribes that have lost their land and home, their heritage, eradicated wholly for the sake of their homeland. Thus we should say “Alhamdulillah” for being here right now embracing our blood and cultures. Yet the idea of unity due to tyranny, is somewhat fragile. What if there is no purpose of unity to fight higher power? Do we need, yet again, another country to invade us to remind ourselves how we become one? well maybe we are already invaded *cough neo-colonialism *cough. Flashback Story Once i almost shed a tears when we were organizing Indonesian culture parade in Frankfurt. Of course every community tribes/region/whatever would want to showcase their culture more than other regions because they are proud of their culture and i totally understand that and that sense of competition are what thrives each region to be better. But one time, one of the region i’m not gonna say it here believes that they could showcase Indonesia’s best of culture and they wanted to put in political agenda into the parade which we disagree on. Pushing her beliefs, she thought it would be best to enter the parade not in the name of Indonesia, but in the name of their own region! I was struck, broken-hearted, mostly angry, and i’m pretty sure everyone understand when i raise my voice, talking while still saddened and angry, holding myself to rage quit the meeting.
What kept us together as Indonesia goes back to every each and every one of us. I personally proud of who i am, and celebrated our diversity by introducing them to other cultures. I love Indonesia, because of the food, the people, the nature she’ offers. It’s not anymore in a tangible form of written policy, or declaration, or bill, but it is inscribed in our mind and our heart that we are Indonesian.
I hope everyone feel the same, tell me what you think.. Why and how Indonesia is still united until now, and how we can keep Bhinneka Tunggal Ika alive forever? ï»ż"La mĂ©moire divise, l'histoire unit" Pierre Nora. L'histoire, c'est l'Ă©tude du passĂ©.
